Galaxy online
Introduction/Overview
Galaxy Online is a new MMORTS game from IGG (http://www.igg.com). IGG is one of the larger free-to-play game publishers on the MMO scene, carrying titles such as Tales of Pirates, Myth War II, and Wonderland Online. IGG quickly gained favor amongst fans with their previous game releases due to their fantastic knack of keeping client sizes small, and with Galaxy Online's client weighing in at a mere 21.2MB they seem to have broken the mold. If your computer can run Solitaire it can easily run Galaxy online.
Galaxy Online's graphics work off a very lightweight sprites system, this game isn't built around eye candy but instead focuses heavily on the player's strategy and faction vs. faction warfare. Players choose their allegiance from one of six factions; a seventh faction called the 'Galactic Pirates' is composed of aggressive NPCs to add some PvE combat into the mix. Player factions can meet head on in combat for some intense strategic battles; caution is a must as combatants can suddenly find themselves facing off with several factions at once. Alliances are made and broken, espionage is a must, and always keep your galaxy under guard!
Notable Features:
Galaxy Online has a built in 'plug-in system' where it is rumored that players will be able to use automation plug-ins to complete the more tedious jobs. By default the only plug-in installed with the game is called 'Dodge', a small mini-game where you simply dodge the incoming items by using your arrow keys.
Galaxy Online is a real-time-strategy game with a great deal of depth and a steep learning curve. It's one of the few games that have taken 'real time strategy' to the extreme; if you want to visit a distant galaxy for any reason you should expect to spend time traveling there. This serves multiple purposes, with the primary one being the games 'radar' warns any resident of the galaxy you are heading for. This 'radar' or 'alarm system' sends messages warning the faction or galaxy residents 60, 30, 15, 10, and 5 minutes in advance when enemy warships are on the approach, thus enabling resident players to assemble in advance and form their defensive strategies should they be required.
Players can overtake and occupy the planets of enemy factions. Players can also abandon or transfer control of planets to others within their faction. In Galaxy Online your planets are your lifeline: you need to harvest their resources to create your ships and weaponry, bolster the world's populations, and last but certainly not least you need those harvests to create your supplies for travel. You can micro-manage your planets or enable trustee status to the game and it will auto-manage your planets and resources for you.
Your colonized planets have stats. If you end up with a planet that has rotten stats but great positioning you can use the 'reconstruct' service and it will randomly change your planets stats. Using 'Reconstruct' does require seven (7) mall points; however, you start out with 30 mall points to help get you going in the game.
The usage of mall points is not necessary to enjoy the game to its fullest potential; Galaxy Online is designed to cater to both the deep pocketed player and the penny pinchers. In your beginner's tutorial quests you are required to use some of your freebie mall points to complete the quest series, but you are not forced to buy extra points to continue -- you are given more than enough to succeed.
